Soybean Oil Processing Plant

Soybean oil extracted from the seeds of soybean is the most productive oil in the world. It contains 7-10% palmitic acid, 2-5% stearic acid, 1-3% arachidonic acid, 22-30% oleic acid, 50-60% linoleic acid and 5-9% linoleic acid. Rich linoleic acid contained in soybean oil has the effect of significantly reducing the content of serum cholesterol and preventing cardiovascular disease. Besides, soybean also contains a lot of vitamin E, vitamin D and rich lecithin, which are beneficial to human health.

The process of soybean oil plant mainly consists of five steps: oilseed handling/elevator operation, preparation of soybeans for solvent extraction, solvent extraction and oil desolventizing, flake desolventizing and oil refining. Soybean oil can be divided into pressing soybean oil and solvent extraction soybean oil according to the method used in soybean oil production. The color of crude soybean oil varies with the seed capsule and variety of soybean. Generally, the crude oil of soybean is in light yellow, light green and dark brown, while refined soybean oil is in light yellow.

Pressing and solvent extraction are commonly used in soybean oil processing plant. Soybean oil extraction uses solvent that can dissolve oil by wet permeability, molecular diffusion and convection diffusion effect to extract oil in flakes. Then, the mixed oil composed of solvent and oil would be separated to recover the solvent and obtain crude soybean oil. Hexane, light gasoline and other kinds of aliphatic hydrocarbons are commonly used as extracting solvents in soybean oil production. The oil extraction rate of solvent extraction can reach 99%.

Soybean oil produced by pressing method in soybean oil plant has natural color, aroma and flavor, and it retains various nutritious ingredients comparing with solvent extraction soybean oil. In the process of soybean oil production with physical pressing, raw materials need to be carefully selected and pre-treated through cleaning, crushing, softening, rolling and extruding. The soybean hulls should be removed because they absorb oil and give a lower yield. After that, the cleaned beans are pressed by the pressing machine, and the finished oil is produced by using high-tech physical refining filtration and purification technology. The pressing soybean oil is rich in vitamin E, and it has a long shelf life. There is no additives, solvent residue or soap content.

Oil refining is another important process in soybean oil processing plant. The oil obtained from pressing or solvent extraction process always contains impurities such as phospholipids, FFA, pigment, off-flavor and other impurities. In order to make the oil edible, the impurities must be removed; such a process is called “Oil Refining”. The oil-insoluble materials are removed with filtration and the soluble materials are removed with different processes including degumming (removing of phosphatides), alkali refining (washing with alkaline solution to remove free fatty acids, colorants, insoluble matter and gums) and bleaching (with activated earth or activated carbon to remove colour and other impurities.
